My name is Nina Julyan, I am a New Zealand artist based in Auckland. I completed a Certificate in Fine Arts and a Certificate in Digital Media and Design. I also completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Whitecliffe College. I have a passion for painting, photography and mixed media, however, I am primarily a photographer.
As an artist, in my practice, I will often explore domestic objects through photography. My work focuses mainly on themes of ‘the archive’ and museology. Capturing ordinary, everyday, or sometimes treasured objects, the same way an archivist or museum would. So whether it be capturing them against a black background individually, or photographing them in their original environment.
In the past, I have focused many times on still life, where I have referenced the dutch masters and their vanitas still life painting. I have then incorporated their ideas into my photography.
One particular object that I have included in my work for a few years now, is Crown Lynn. Not only is it a strong and iconic symbol of New Zealand, but it is very personal to me because my maternal grandmother is a collector of Crown Lynn and I have always been surrounded by it.
I continue to focus on everyday, ordinary domestic objects, however, Crown Lynn and working with nature and still life will always be a passion of mine.
